This calculator determines a student's rate of pursuit by dividing the credits enrolled in a term by the school's full-time credit requirement. Enter the term type, credits enrolled, and full-time standard (12 credits is typical for undergraduates), and it returns the percentage, the training time band (full-time, three-quarter, half-time, or less than half-time), and the Chapter 33 monthly housing allowance tier that band maps to, along with certification guidance you can print.
School Certifying Officials rely on rate of pursuit when certifying non-standard terms, summer sessions, and accelerated courses where the usual credit chart does not apply. It matters most for Post-9/11 GI Bill students: rate of pursuit must be greater than 50 percent for a student to receive any monthly housing allowance, so an add or drop that crosses that line changes the payment outcome.
Practical tips: confirm the official full-time standard in your catalog for the specific level and term length instead of assuming 12 credits; recalculate after every add or drop, since crossing a threshold changes the MHA tier; and keep a printed copy of the calculation in the student file to support the certified training time.
