Chapter 33 charges a percentage of a day equal to the rate of pursuit (38 CFR 21.9561), for example 9 of 12 credits = 75. Chapters 30, 35, and 1606 charge by training time: full-time 100, three-quarter 75, half-time 50, less than half-time 25 (Chapter 30 treats it as quarter-time, 38 CFR 21.7076).

About this tool

This calculator tracks how much GI Bill entitlement a student has left and how fast the current term will use it. Select the benefit chapter (Chapters 33, 30, 1606, and 35 default to 36 months, Chapter 31 to 48; change Chapter 35 to 45 months for students who started school or training before August 1, 2018), enter months already used, the current rate of pursuit or training time, and the term length. It returns remaining entitlement in months and days, the months this term will consume (term length multiplied by the rate), the balance after the term, a percent-used progress bar, and an optional countdown to the delimiting date.

School Certifying Officials use it during enrollment counseling and before certifying a term, especially for students nearing exhaustion. The tool flags a warning when benefits will run out mid-term and a notice when fewer than four months remain, which is the moment to start a funding conversation with the student.

Tips: pull the months-used figure from the student's current VA award data rather than estimating; remember that part-time enrollment stretches entitlement, so a half-time term charges only half the months; and recheck after any training time change, since the burn rate changes with it.
