About this tool

This calculator builds a complete annual cost of attendance for a veteran student and measures it against available funding. Enter tuition, mandatory fees, and living expenses (housing, books, transportation, personal, other), then the expected VA tuition payment, annual housing allowance, and book stipend, plus scholarships, grants, and loans. It totals direct and living costs, totals resources, and runs a gap analysis that flags a shortfall or surplus with practical recommendations.

School Certifying Officials and financial aid staff use it during pre-enrollment counseling so a student sees the real budget before committing, and again when benefits change mid-program. It is especially useful for Chapter 33 students at partial benefit tiers, where the VA tuition payment covers less than students often assume.

Tips: for the housing allowance, multiply the monthly amount by nine months rather than twelve, since MHA is paid only while enrolled; remember MHA goes to the student for living costs, not to the school; and rerun the estimate every year because tuition, rates, and the student's remaining entitlement all move.
