VASCO Standalone Tool #5 - Determine payment during academic breaks
This calculator applies the legacy Chapter 33 break pay rules to a gap between terms. Enter the benefit chapter, the end date of the term before the break, the start date of the term after, the break type, and whether the student is enrolled on both sides. It computes the break length in days and shows whether monthly housing allowance would continue under the old rule: breaks under 28 days paid, breaks of 28 days or more (including summer) not paid, and Chapter 30 and 1606 students paid only for months actively enrolled. A payment timeline and certification guidance are generated for printing.
Note that the Forever GI Bill (Colmery Act) ended break or interval pay, so MHA is now prorated to actual enrollment dates rather than continuing through short breaks. School Certifying Officials still use this logic when reviewing historical certifications, responding to compliance survey questions about older terms, and explaining to students why housing payments stop between terms.
Tips: always certify actual term start and end dates and let VA handle proration; counsel students to budget for gaps between terms; and confirm the student is returning before assuming continuous certification.
