Do I need to verify enrollment monthly?
Who has to verify GI Bill enrollment each month, the three ways to do it, what missed months cost, and when to hold off on verifying.
Yes. If you use the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you need to confirm your enrollment with the VA every month. If you miss two months in a row, your housing allowance pauses until you verify. It takes seconds, and it is one of the easiest payment problems to avoid.
How to verify
- Near the end of each month, watch for a text or email from the VA asking you to verify.
- Reply "Yes" to the text, or follow the link in the email.
- If you do not get the message, sign in to VA.gov and verify there.
Keep your contact details current
Most missed verifications I see come from an old phone number or email in VA.gov. Update your profile before each term, and set a monthly reminder near the end of the month.
Verification is separate from what your school does. Your certifying official reports your classes each term. You confirm each month that you are still attending as reported. Both are needed for payments to keep flowing.
If your payments paused because you missed verifications, verify on VA.gov right away, and call the VA education line at 888-442-4551 if payments do not resume.
