What if my GI Bill runs out mid-term?
How Post-9/11 payments continue when entitlement ends partway through a term, the conditions that protection depends on, and when payments stop.
If your school runs on quarters or semesters, the VA keeps paying your Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits through the last day of the quarter or semester in which your entitlement runs out. That includes tuition, fees, and the housing allowance. If your school does not use quarters or semesters, the VA pays through the end of the course or 12 weeks after your months run out, whichever comes first, but only if you have finished more than half the course. Otherwise payments stop the day your entitlement runs out. I have walked many students through this, and the rule is more generous than most people expect, but it has conditions.
When the protection applies
- You started the term while you still had entitlement left.
- Your school uses quarters or semesters, or, if it does not, you have completed more than half the course.
- You stay enrolled and keep attending through the end of the term.
When it does not
- You start a new term after your months have already run out.
- You withdraw or stop attending after your entitlement ends. This is the most common way students lose the protection and end up with debt.
- You transfer schools or change programs, creating a new enrollment period after you hit zero.
- Pull a fresh Statement of Benefits on VA.gov before you register.
- Bring it to your certifying official and confirm the term will be certified before your months run out.
- Keep your attendance steady and tell your certifying official right away if anything changes.
- Line up funding for the following term, such as state veteran benefits, scholarships, or VR&E if you qualify.
Other chapters have their own rules. If the VA stops paying mid-term and you believe that is a mistake, you can ask for a review. Your certifying official can confirm the certified term dates for you.
