What if I transfer to a new school?
File VA Form 22-1995, not a new application. Your entitlement carries over, but you'll work with the new school's certifying official.
If you already have VA education benefits and move to a new school, you file VA Form 22-1995, the request for a change of program or place of training. You do not reapply with 22-1990. Your remaining entitlement, benefit percentage, and any delimiting date carry over with you.
- Confirm the new school and program are VA-approved.
- File VA Form 22-1995 on VA.gov with your new school and program.
- Contact the new school's certifying official, share your COE, and complete their intake forms.
- Tell your old school's certifying official when your last day there will be, so they can close out your enrollment accurately.
- Ask the new school how your transfer credits apply to your program. Only courses you still need can be certified.
Things that do not transfer
- Yellow Ribbon. Each agreement is between the VA and a single school. You would start fresh under the new school's agreement, if it has one and has space.
- Your housing rate. It is based on the new campus ZIP code, or the online rate.
Handle the paperwork a term ahead if you can. The biggest delays I see come from students who show up at a new school in week one with no 22-1995 on file.
